Is Your Toothpaste Safe?

Toothbrush, toothpaste, rinse and repeat. Toothpaste is a staple of your daily dental hygiene routine.
Brands will leave no stone unturned to make sure that it is their toothpaste tube that you squeeze. They do not miss out on any opportunity to reach out to you with dozens of (sometimes confusing) promises – claiming anything from decay protection to teeth strengthening to whitening to gum shielding backed by their handpicked dentists’ claims.

Any independent body or organization who is keeping their claims in check?
Sadly, there are not many studies in India available on subject. Mostly, its hand-in-glove organizations funded by these brands to move the favor needle to their end in this consumerist market.

Luckily, not all intentions are masqueraded.
During my independent analysis, I unearthed an independent study done by an NGO organization in India whose research was better at keeping unbiased opinion.

Below are some of the key observations.

  • Regular Toothpaste v/s Herbal Toothpaste
There is No ‘significant’ difference between regular toothpastes and the herbal ones.
Over 90 per cent of the ingredients in both are same and the rest 10 per cent is generally those added flavours or other agents that become differentiation elements and also help in creating a unique selling proposition (USP) that brands talk about in their marketing messages.
When this 10 per cent element also includes 2.5 per cent of herbal extracts or Ayurvedic elements, the paste becomes herbal – in any case, that is what a consumer is made to believe.
Yes, you read that right, just 2.5% differentiation between your chemical laided vs herbal toothpastes.
  • Cosmetics or medicine?
Toothpastes are classified under the category of “cosmetics” and not medicine
Having said that, don’t get mislead by their wordings on packets/commercials like “anti-**”.

Key Takeaways

  • The toothpastes which are available are normal toothpastes with very limited extracts of herb.
  • You cannot afford to miss your routine dental visits bi-anually with your dentist for your over all health and well being because
